Institut Lumière
Lyon, France
The Institut Lumière is located at the site of the former photographic film factory of the brothers Lumière. This site was the backdrop for the very first film. The redevelopement, including an exhibition space and a movie theater with 250 seats, holds several pointers that reference this historic event.
The camera was setup in the door opening of the house accross the street. From there, the workers were recorded as if they left the factory at the end of the day. This vantage point formed the bases for the positioning of the film screen in the new cinema. The viewing angle is marked with lights in the pavement. The outdoor exposition, which consist of glass panels printed with stills from the first films, also references that first vantage point.
The first film, just like many of those that followed, was carefully prepared. The workers that answered the invitiation to appear in the film were dressed Sunday-best...
dUCKS contributed to the conceptualization of the project, developed the cinema and its technical facilities, and designed the permanent outdoor exposition.
