SMAC Le 106
Rouen, France
Le 106 is a hangar in the old river port area converted into a multipurpose pop center. The design of the project was lead by King Kong architects from Bordeaux.
The main performance space is located in the center of the building, with all public and backstage support spaces grouped around it. The hall has a system of retractable seating elements that make it easy to convert the room from seated only (510), via mixed standing and seated (747) to standing room only (1 148). A second performance space “Le Club” has room for up to 300, and has a fixed stage, and a flat dance floor. A large foyer with ample possibilities for (ad-hoc) performance and expositions is placed between the two halls and offers views on the old port.
Other facilities for 106 include five rehearsal studios for pop and rock, and a small demo recording studio with electronic “lab” that can be used in conjunction with the performance and rehearsal spaces.
The technical design of the room includes a ceiling grid of six large trolley beams that carry chain hoists, with a cross-connecting tube grid for lighter loads. This system provides ample suspension points for various loud scenarios, and very flexible placement. Both performance spaces have technical galleries at the sides, cross-connected by an open control position for sound and lighting in the back of the room.
dUCKS scéno assisted the design team with the general conception of the performance space and its associated facilities, and designed the suspension, stage, seating, audiovisual and stage lighting systems.
