Opening operatheater Silos d'Arenc

21 September 2011

Marseille has a new multipurpose theater. The old silo building at the perimeter of the city was reconverted to a 2 000-seat music-theater.

The auditorium, constructed inside a group of large grain silos, was originally destined for variety shows and amplified music performances. During the design phases, the program and the resulting design were subsequently upgraded with simple means to make the venue also suitable for operetta, small-scale opera and even symphonic repertoire.

The other functions of the theater are grouped around the silos. The discharge space below the silos has been converted into a large foyer area.

The inauguration festivities showed the first successes of a truly multifunctional music-theater building for Marseille, which will see its program ramp-up in the coming months.
