Opening Museum Lalique
1 July 2011
Today, the Museum Lalique in Wingen-sur-Moder, in the north-east corner of France, was opened in presence of several representatives of local, regional and national government and institutions. The museum, designed by Wilmotte & Associés, is dedicated to the work of René Lalique, who founded the Lalique glass factories in 1921.
The museum’s collection consists of numerous glass masterworks of exceptional quality designed by René Lalique, such as Art Nouveau jewelry, ranging from a unique collection of perfume bottles, vases, table centerpieces, statuettes, lamps, radiator caps (!), and one-off designs to more recent glasswork creations. Next to presenting the rich catalog, the museum has an educational mission. The nearby factory provides opportunities for sharing knowledge and techniques about working with glass, which is presented in historical and artistic contexts.
Previously, dUCKS was involved in the design of a special exhibition around the works of Lalique. For the architectural project, dUCKS was consultant to the architects for the design of the exposition, and worked closely with the museum’s curators to develop the museographic program, the concept design of the permanent exhibition and the circulation. Other disciplines in which dUCKS intervened were the design of the audiovisual systems, the development of guidelines for the graphics design, the exhibition lighting design, and, in an assisting role, the content for the various audiovisual presentations.
